Nordic Youth Network Against Hate Speech
Hate speech threatens youth participation and inclusion across the Nordic region. Since 2023, together with several youth organisations in all Nordic countries, we have brought young people together to create an inspiring, inclusive, and youth-led network to counter hate speech. Nordic youth are at the heart of this initiative – both as organisers and participants.
The first project that laid the foundation for the Nordic Youth Network Against Hate Speech was funded by the Norden 0–30 Grant Programme.
Why this work matters
Hate speech is a growing concern in all Nordic countries. Rising far-right political activity, alongside racism and discrimination, is shrinking the public space for discussions on human rights and democracy. In response, the network funded by the Norden 0–30 Grant Programme gathered more than 75 young people from across the Nordics in 2024 to create safer spaces for meaningful dialogue and action.
What we achieved in 2024
The project strengthened young people’s sense of agency and belonging, while tackling pressing themes such as discrimination, racism, far-right extremism, and violent radicalisation. Together, youth formed a sustainable, youth-led Nordic network dedicated to countering hate speech.
In 2024, the network organised:
- 20+ online youth meetings and webinars
- 2 in-person steering group meetings in Helsinki
- A study trip to Iceland and participation in a conference at Utøya, with over 50 youth taking part
Through these activities, the network has provided young people with a sense of agency, community, and trust, as well as a supportive space to connect with peers and continue their work against hate speech.
Led by youth, for youth
The network is maintained and developed by youth themselves. Its steering group, made up of 10 young people from across the Nordics, guides the project while ensuring space for peers to actively shape its direction. The network is designed to evolve over time with new generations of Nordic youth.
What’s next
Looking ahead, the planned activities for spring 2026 include:
- Training at the European Youth Center (March 2026)
- A youth camp in winter 2026 (exact time and place to be decided by the steering group)
Updates on upcoming activities will be published on this page.
