What is the role of a new generation and peace education in Europe at war?
Still in January 2022, much of our notion of war and peace in the Western Europe was derived from the aftermath of the Second World War. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine put us in front of the following questions: what is the role and space of peace in Europe, where do we need to go and what is the role of a new generation and peace education in Europe at war?
New Generation Wakes Up to a War (NewGen) is a three-year project, where youth workers, young activists and peace professionals are working to find non-violent social responses to the war in Ukraine on local levels in Finland, Poland and Romania.
The main aim of the project is to return the focus on the importance of non-violent social response to militant actions and reclaim the agency of activism and education in building positive peace that the outbreak of the war has taken away. NewGen consist of two rounds of one year international trainings on peace education and peace work, national mentoring processes for participants, local peace initiatives and a final international seminar in Berlin.
Find more about the work of us in NewGen in Portraits of Peace –publication. It is an online story about how do we build, and continue to build peace in Europe in the times of war by young peacemakers and people working with youth. It’s a story of three years of working together in Finland, Poland and Romania, building sustainable and resilient communities during turbulent times.
