Is there anything in common with Lebanon, Syria,\u00a0Palestine\u00a0and the small,\u00a0idyllic\u00a0and demilitarized islands of\u00a0\u00c5land,\u00a0that\u00a0island located\u00a0between Finland and Sweden? Not much, one could say. Except from time to time they are filled with laughter, sweat,\u00a0big ideas, courage, some more laughter \u2013 and women on bicycles talking about peace.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Peace Seminar on Bicycles<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In late August of 2017, fifty women from all over the world, professionals from different political levels of peace mediation,\u00a0<\/span>education<\/span>\u00a0and prevention, gathered to start a five-day journey into the stunning archipelago of Finland and into\u00a0<\/span>each others\u2019<\/span>\u00a0ideas<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and methodologies in\u00a0peace<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>building.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The main idea of the cycling peace seminar, organized by the Peace Education Institute Finland (RKI), was to take professionals out of their working rooms, get them together and give them time to connect. The aim of the journey was\u00a0<\/span>to expose\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>participants<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o\u00a0<\/span>each\u00a0<\/span>other\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0thinking and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>discuss<\/span>\u00a0women\u2019s roles in\u00a0<\/span>today’s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>peace building.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Many\u00a0<\/span>women<\/span>\u00a0agreed on the importance of cooperation in\u00a0peace<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>building. As<\/span>\u00a0Jordanian<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Razan Mahmoud Abdullah Al-Hadid<\/span><\/b>\u00a0put it<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201dWhat<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I\u2019ve<\/span><\/i>\u00a0learned is<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0that at the end of the day, people are the same humans everywhere<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and many of the challenges we face are many times the same. We need to be able to see beyond our own way of doing and look for common goals, to overcome our differences and work together for the process of peace.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Not only\u00a0<\/span>were<\/span>\u00a0there\u00a0<\/span>plenty<\/span>\u00a0of networking<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but also millions of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, and the safety that only peers can offer for\u00a0<\/span>persons whose daily work is more standing against than going along.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

After one-week\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>biking<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we arranged a seminar<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWomen and Youth Building Peace\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in Helsinki town hall,\u00a0<\/span>that linked<\/span>\u00a0the outcomes of\u00a0<\/span>bicycle round<\/span>\u00a0to a wider context of youth,\u00a0<\/span>women<\/span>\u00a0and peacebuilding.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>speakers\u00a0<\/span>Nasima\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Razmyar<\/span><\/b>, a<\/span>\u00a0vice<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>–<\/span>director of the city of Helsinki<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Detta Regan<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from Follow the Women<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Colombian human rights adviser\u00a0<\/span>Sara Cristina Lara Gonzalez<\/span><\/b>\u00a0f<\/span>rom\u00a0<\/span>IELC<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0French\u00a0<\/span>Samia\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Hathroubi<\/span><\/b>, the founder of NGO\u00a0<\/span>Coexister<\/span>; Georgian\u00a0<\/span>Kety\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Zhvania<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Tyson from<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Sunny House;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Riikka\u00a0Jalonen<\/span><\/b>\u00a0execut<\/span>i<\/span>ve dir<\/span>e<\/span>ctor of\u00a0<\/span>RKI;\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Johanna<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Poutanen,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0senior manager from CMI\u2019s Women in Peacemaking<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Minna\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Saarnivaara<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>Felm\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Syria Initiative<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>brought their insights to women\u2019s and youth’s role\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>creating and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sustain<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0peace.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
