The Peace Education Institute (<\/span>Rauhankasvatusinstituutti<\/span>\u00a0RKI\u00a0<\/span>ry<\/span>) is a politically and religiously non-aligned non-governmental organization\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span>\u00a0in 1981<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0We have an official partner<\/span>ship<\/span>\u00a0with UNESCO<\/span>\u00a0with consultative status<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The basis of our work is to recognize the courage in every individual to act\u00a0<\/span>for a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>world where justice and peace prevails. Key theme<\/span>s in our work are antiracism,\u00a0<\/span>equality,<\/span>\u00a0and global\u00a0<\/span>responsibility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We do this by strengthening the understanding of the consequences of actions on local and global levels.<\/span>\u00a0We think that\u00a0<\/span>maximum participation and representation\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span> the <\/span>keys<\/span>\u00a0to sustainable peace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our\u00a0<\/span>understanding of peace education is derived from UNESCO\u00a0<\/span>Recommendation concerning Education for International Understanding, Co-operation and Peace and Education relating to Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms<\/span>\u00a0(1974)<\/span>, which states: “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.”<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We build an equal and nonviolent world as a part of the global peace movement. We develop and distribute new\u00a0<\/span>method<\/span>olog<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for schools and non-formal education settings\u00a0<\/span>with our international partners.\u00a0<\/span>At the moment<\/span> we have more than 40 active and working partnerships with organizations outside Finland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We offer professional\u00a0<\/span>in-service<\/span>\u00a0training for teachers and youth workers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In practice<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0this means\u00a0<\/span>providing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>training<\/span>\u00a0on methods to\u00a0<\/span>identify<\/span>\u00a0and tackle discrimination<\/span> and strengthening participation and active critical citizenship of young people. We <\/span>train educators\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0how<\/span> to make power structures and norms visible. Also, we train<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how to solve conflicts between\u00a0<\/span>diverse groups<\/span>\u00a0in a nonviolent manner.<\/span> We work in close cooperation with organizations from the education sector,\u00a0universities\u00a0and NGOs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Every year, we train hundreds of teachers<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>youth workers<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nationally and internationally<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in formal and non-formal settings<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Our projects are mainly funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education and the European Union. We are one of the nine Finnish youth work institutions accredited for annual general funding from the Erasmus+ programme for 2021\u20132027.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

An official partnership with consultative status has been established between UNESCO and the Peace Education Institute at the end of the year 2020. Through cooperation, we have the possibility to influence the content and procedures of global peace education and share information on Finnish Peace Education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
